PASTORS & STAFF

Howell Scott

Senior Pastor

Pastor Howell Scott began serving as First Baptist Carlsbad’s Senior Pastor on October 13, 2019. Howell graduated from George Washington University in 1988 and from Florida State University College of Law in 1991. Following law school, Howell moved back to his hometown, Lake Placid, Florida, to begin his law career. After spending three years practicing law, Howell answered God’s call to the Gospel Ministry in December 1993. In preparation for ministry, Howell and his wife, Brenda, moved to Louisville, Kentucky where they both attended The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, graduating with Master of Divinity degrees in December 1997.

Since entering full-time ministry, Howell has served as Associate Pastor at First Baptist Church, Poinciana, Florida, Pastor of Grundy Baptist Church in Grundy, Virginia, Senior Pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Alamogordo, New Mexico, and, prior to returning to New Mexico, as Senior Pastor of Ramoth Baptist Church in Stafford, Virginia.

Howell and Brenda, who were married on July 18, 1992, have been blessed with three sons: Stephen, Jacob, and Andrew. In addition to serving in the local church, the Scotts enjoy spending time with their family, outdoor recreation, travel, and sports. Although born and raised in Florida, the Scott family loves New Mexico and is thankful to answer God’s call to serve alongside the people of First Baptist Church Carlsbad.

Howell has often been asked how he went from lawyer to pastor. He tells people that he once was in law, but God called him to grace. He loves to preach God’s word and to share the life-transforming message of hope, forgiveness, and redemption found in the Gospel of Christ.

Howell’s favorite verse of Scripture is found in Isaiah 26:3,

“You will keep the mind that is dependent on you in perfect peace, for it is trusting in you. Trust in the LORD forever, because in the LORD, the LORD himself, is an everlasting rock!”

Kevin Pence

Associate Pastor of Music and Worship

Kevin is originally from Sugar Land, Texas. He accepted Christ at the age of nine and was baptized at FBC Sugar Land. Kevin was called into the ministry as a college student at Houston Baptist University. It was while at HBU that Kevin met his wife, Amy. The couple were married in 1986.

Kevin is a graduate of Houston Baptist University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has served churches in and around the Houston area and has been on staff at FBC Carlsbad since 1992.

Kevin’s life verse is Colossians 3:16,
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."

He enjoys serving the Lord through music and missions. Kevin has had the opportunity to be involved in sharing the Gospel and leading worship locally, as well as internationally, and has been blessed to be a mentor to musicians through ministry, training, and education.

Kevin has served in leadership positions in the Pecos Valley Baptist Association and the Baptist Convention of New Mexico. Kevin and Amy are also involved in the New Mexico Disaster Relief ministry.

Michael Davidson

Associate Pastor of Students and Singles

I’m Michael Davidson, I was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. Although I grew up in a Catholic household, I became a Christ-follower at the age of 16 in a Baptist Church. A few years later, I surrendered to God’s call into full-time ministry. I began serving in children’s ministry, youth camps, and my college group. To better prepare for ministry, I attended college at Southwestern Seminary. In God’s grace and kindness, I met my wonderful wife Emily there in 2016. I love pouring into youth and young adults because they are in a unique stage in life of forming their beliefs about God and the world around them. My youth pastor had a huge impact in my life, and I owe my passion for the younger generations to him.

I’m a self-proclaimed nerd as I like playing chess and reading, but I also really enjoy camping, hiking, and a good game of ping pong. I like studying apologetics, keeping a pulse on culture, and learning about various worldviews in order to engage our lost world with the truth. My wife and I spend our (limited) free time chatting in coffee shops, watching a good movie, and hosting game nights with friends.

Tammy Frintz

Children's Coordinator

I have been involved with the Children’s Ministry at First Baptist Church for about 9 years. I started as a Sunday School Volunteer in 4th grade but I have actually always been in Children’s Ministry for most of my adult life no matter where I have gone to Church. I started as the Children’s Coordinator June of 2023. Helping point children to God is one of the greatest joys in my life. I love them all as if they were mine. I am a wife and a mom to two children. My goal is to teach the next generation about God and have fun while were doing it!

Nancy Burt

Preschool Coordinator

I have been married to Doug since August 24, 1978. We have two daughters, Tiffany Brown and Jessica Campbell and have five granddaughters, Peighton & Aubrie Brown, and Hannah, Mattie and Abby Campbell. I taught preschool at the First Methodist Preschool in Carlsbad for 10 years and Kindergarten for Carlsbad Municipal Schools for 27 years.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Education from Wayland Baptist University and a Masters of Education from Eastern New Mexico University.
I have worked with young children all of my adult life and love their fresh perspective on life and faith. My greatest joy is helping the little ones come to know our Lord better.
