Howell Scott
Senior Pastor
Howell has served as Senior Pastor of First Baptist Carlsbad since October 2019. Before entering ministry, he practiced law in his hometown of Lake Placid, Florida. In 1993, God called him to Gospel ministry, leading Howell and his wife, Brenda, to attend The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where they both earned Master of Divinity degrees.
Howell and Brenda have three sons: Stephen, Jacob, and Andrew. They enjoy spending time with family, traveling, outdoor recreation, and sports.
Howell is passionate about preaching God’s Word and sharing the life-transforming hope, forgiveness, and redemption found in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Reflecting on his journey from attorney to pastor, he often says that he was once in law, but God called him to grace.
Howell’s favorite verse of Scripture is found in Isaiah 26:3-4,
“You will keep the mind that is dependent on you in perfect peace, for it is trusting in you. Trust in the LORD forever, because in the LORD, the LORD himself, is an everlasting rock!”
Kevin Pence
Associate Pastor of Missions and Community
Kevin has served on staff at First Baptist Carlsbad since 1992 and currently serves as Associate Pastor of Missions and Community. Originally from Sugar Land, Texas, he accepted Christ as a child and answered God’s call to ministry while attending Houston Baptist University, where he met his wife, Amy.
Kevin is passionate about sharing the Gospel through missions, music, and community ministry. He has served and led worship both locally and internationally and enjoys mentoring others through ministry, training, and education.
Kevin and Amy are actively involved in New Mexico Baptist Disaster Relief. Through his ministry at First Baptist, Kevin desires to help the church serve its community faithfully and make Christ known in Carlsbad and beyond.
Kevin’s life verse is
Colossians 3:16,
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."

Nick Harvey
Associate Pastor of Music & Worship
Nick has been part of the First Baptist Carlsbad family since 2011 and joined the church staff in 2020. After serving in several areas of the music ministry, he now serves as Associate Pastor of Music & Worship, leading the church’s worship, music, and media ministries.
Nick began playing piano at eight years old and has developed a love for helping people worship through music. He is passionate about Christ-centered worship, serving with excellence, and equipping musicians and ministry leaders to use their gifts for God’s glory.
Nick also serves on the faculty of Worship4Life, a student leadership camp of the Baptist Convention of New Mexico. He especially enjoys investing in the next generation and helping students develop both their musical abilities and a heart for serving the local church.
Tammy Frintz
Children's Ministry Coordinator
I have been involved with the Children’s Ministry at First Baptist Church since around 2015. I started as a Sunday School Volunteer in 4th grade but I have actually always been in Children’s Ministry for most of my adult life no matter where I have gone to church.
I started as the Children’s Coordinator June of 2023. Helping point children to God is one of the greatest joys in my life. I love them all as if they were mine. I am a wife, and a mom to two children.
My goal is to teach the next generation about God and have fun while we're doing it!
Nancy Burt
Preschool Ministry Coordinator
I have been married to Doug since August 24, 1978. We have two daughters, Tiffany Brown and Jessica Campbell, and have five granddaughters, Peighton & Aubrie Brown, and Hannah, Mattie, and Abby Campbell. I taught preschool at the First Methodist Preschool in Carlsbad for 10 years and Kindergarten for Carlsbad Municipal Schools for 27 years.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Education from Wayland Baptist University and a Masters of Education from Eastern New Mexico University.
I have worked with young children all of my adult life and love their fresh perspective on life and faith. My greatest joy is helping the little ones come to know our Lord better.
